I  don't  want  to  buy  new  psu  just  in  case  it's  the  gfx  card  or  the  mobo

it's  a  mine  field  of  chaos  !  Just  counted  my  piggy  bank  and  got  Â£  200  in  it  ,  so  I'll  keep  saving  till  I  can  afford  something  from  cyberpower  systems  website.

There  are  a  few  easy  stepts  to  check  if  u  can  get  it  running  again.

 1.  Open  the  chassis  and  smell  if  it  smells  like  burned  rubber  or  simulair.
(if  so  its  prob  better  if  u  get  a  new  pc)

 2.  Disconnect  the  power  supply

 3.  There  is  a  battery  in  the  middle  somewhere  of  your  mainboard,  take  that  out  for  an  half  an  hour  and  then  put  it  back  in  again

 4.  take  a  piece  of  toilet  paper  or  earclean  plug  and  remove  all  the  dust  u  can  find,  specially  on  the  fans  that  cool  down  your  equipment,  overheating  is  a  reason  why  a  computer  doesnt  boot  up.  Its  secured  not  to  do  so  in  case  of  fire  etc.

 5.  when  not  already  put  the  battery  back  in  place.

 6.  connect  the  power  supply  again.  and  press  power

Dust  can  easily  prevent  a  pc  from  starting  up.

OK,  lets  eliminate  the  PSU  first.....

Your  motherboard  should  have  some  indication  on  it  to  reflect  that  it  is  getting  power.  Some  Motherboards  just  have  a  LED,  some  have  a  POST  probe  showing  2  digits.  If  either  of  these  are  lit,  then  you  have  something  else  which  is  dead.

To  break  the  scenario  down,  remove  all  your  cards  that  you  have  installed.  Does  the  machine  now  boot  with  just  the  motherboard?  If  not,  remove  the  RAM  modules.  Power  the  machine  up  -  it  should  beep  several  times  now  as  there  is  no  RAM  recognised.

Without  using  another  PSU  to  eliminate  this,  there  is  no  sure  way  to  guarantee  where  the  problem  is  without  seeing  the  machine.  If  the  machine  booted,  I  have  the  tools  to  tell  me  which  component  has  actually  failed  but  it  needs  to  boot  first.  I  share  your  pain!!

Of  course  if  you  had  some  sort  of  power  surge,  it  could  just  be  the  fuse  in  the  plug!!  I've  seen  that  one  before  :-)

 Cheers
 Tim

 YO!!  Morc,

OK,  you  do  not  have  onboard  graphics.  So,  without  knowing  which  graphics  card  you  have  can't  do  too  much  :-(

Does  your  graphics  card  have  external  power  to  it  via  the  floppy/HDD  power  connector?  If  so,  try  another  connector.  You  should  have  a  fan  on  the  card  unless  it  has  a  massive  heat  sink  to  make  it  silent.

So,  reseat  the  graphics  card  ONLY  and  connect  the  power  to  it.  When  you  power  the  system  up,  does  the  fan  on  the  card  turn?  If  not,  you  have  a  power  problem/fan  problem  on  the  card  which  is  shorting  out  the  AGP  connector  causing  your  motherboard  to  protect  itself.  You  can  pick  up  fairly  decent  entry  level  cards  for  approx  Â£35  so  that  may  be  the  way  to  go  if  you  are  on  a  budget.

I've  seen  graphic  cards  cause  all  sorts  of  problems  (Dom  &  Adam's  PC  generally!!)  where  they  have  been  slightly  dislodged  which  causes  a  PC  not  to  boot.  If  the  cooling  fan  is  not  turning,  the  GPU  on  the  card  will  overheat  very  quickly.  However,  most  times  the  machine  will  POST  (Power  on  Self  Test  -  where  you  see  the  BIOS  screen)  and  then  shut  down.  That  is  indicative  of  the  GPU  overheating  or  North/South  bridge  on  the  motherboard  failing.

 Let  me  know
 Cheers
 Tim

LMAO!!  I  was  posting  when  you  did!!  Connect  up  the  power  to  the  Graphics  card  -  you  should  then  be  fine!!

Hi  tim  ,  after  origionaly  finding  out  I  didn't  connect  the  external  power  supply   two  weeks  ago  I  did  then  connect  it  ,  the  rebooting  happened  after  that  ,  after  random  rebooting  on  Saturday  it  wouldn't  boot  up  at  All  ,  now  gfx  card  is  out  it  boots  up  ,  now  I  know  when  it  was  last  connected  the  fans  on  gfx  card  were  turning  (  xpert  vision  9600  gt)

Hmmmmmm,  sounds  like  it  could  well  be  your  graphics  card  then  preventing  the  system  from  booting.  Do  you  have  an  old  one  that  would  work  with  your  system  -  just  to  see  if  it  boots?

 hey  morc

another  small  thing  to  maybe  help  you

I  had  same  type  of  problem,  after  a  while  comp  shut  down.  Â  What  i  noticed  was  the  mobo  and  graphics  card  were  gone.

Have  a  look  at  mobo  and  graphics  card  capacitors,  you  will  probably  have  some  electrolytic  ones  that  have  a  small  cross  on  top,  plastic  surronding  with  voltage  written  on  side.  Â  If  the  top  looks  like  popped  then  probably  thats  your  start  of  problem.  Â  Thats  what  happened  to  me  and  it  took  a  year  or  two  of  anoying  power  downs  lol

hmmmmmm,  motherboard  problem  me  thinks.  PSU  swapout  is  fairly  simple  but  I  think  that  you  are  right  to  start  looking  at  a  new  machine.  The  cost  of  diagnosing  a  problem  like  this  would  outweigh  the  cost  of  a  new  machine.  Such  a  great  society  that  we  live  in  when  it  is  cheaper  to  throw  away  than  repair.
